3 Types of Garage Door Openers

Garage Door Opener

There are several different types of garage door openers.

When it comes to buying a garage door opener, you might think it will be a simple decision to make. After all, it’s a simple tool, right? You just need to decide to buy one and then go get it, problem solved. However, there is no standard in garage door openers, and in fact, there are several different kinds that come with their own set of benefits and drawbacks. Before purchasing a garage door opener, you should do your due diligence in researching and deciding which type of garage door opener is right for you and your garage.

Chain Drive

First, there is a chain drive garage door opener. It is considered to be the most common type of garage door opener, so if you have ever been in a garage before, odds are you have come across one. Part of the reason why they are the standard garage door opener is that they are one of the more cheaper options, as well as being one of the most reliable ones. It is simply comprised of a chain that is used to pull a trolley that can move your garage door up and down as need be. Although, a major drawback to chain drive garage door openers is that they tend to be loud. A chain drive is best installed in a detached garage so that you can avoid the loud noises made when your garage door opens.

Belt Drive

Instead of a chain, a belt drive uses a belt to open up your garage, as the name would suggest. Belt drives tend to be more expensive than chain drive garage door openers are. However, the price is worth it if you have an attached garage because they make a considerable amount of less noise than a chain drive does. A belt is also much stronger than a chain is, allowing a belt drive garage door opener to carry and open much heavier doors than a chain drive ever could.

Screw Drive

With a screw drive garage door opener, the trolley is moved by a rotating threaded steel rod. There are less materials and components to a screw drive than the previously mentioned options, thus making it so a screw drive requires much less maintenance during its operating years. Although, much like a chain drive, you can expect plenty of noise to be made from this garage door opener.
