Preparing Your Garage Door for Summer

Here are a few maintenance tips to get your garage door ready for summer.

Summer is coming up shortly, and it may be the perfect time to get your garage door ready for the season. Getting your garage door cleaned and repaired every season is a good habit to have because it lets you detect any problems before they spiral out of control. Regular maintenance also extends your door’s lifespan. Here are a few maintenance tips to get your garage door ready for summer.

Test Your Garage Door

The first thing you need to do is find out how well your garage door is functioning. Try opening and closing your door and see if there are any problems with this process. A smoothly-running door is a good sign. If you see uneven motions, it means you have to adjust something. The springs could be out of balance, or your tracks might be out of alignment. In both cases, getting a professional garage door company to fix the problem is often the best solution.

Lubricate Moving Parts

If your garage door seems to be working fine, you should spend time lubricating the moving parts. If you don’t lubricate moving pieces, they can get stuck or cause friction, which can cause damage to your door.

Find the rollers (small “wheels”) on the garage door and run them along the tracks. Make sure to clean the track before you lubricate the rollers. Wiping the tracks can also help, but usually, a vacuum is best to remove debris from the tracks.

After that, put your lubricant on the rollers. Do not lubricate the tracks. Instead, open and close your garage door a couple of times so that some of the lubricant from the rollers falls onto the tracks. Applying lubricant to the door or the hinges can also be a good idea, as well as to the chain that connects your opener to your door.

Check Your Weatherstripping

Take a little time to inspect the weatherstripping on your garage door. Some people believe the weatherstripping is only needed to keep cold air out of your garage, but this is not the case. You also want to keep hot air out of your garage during the summer. It’s also handy for keeping pests out of your garage. To make sure your weatherstripping is in good shape, confirm that it forms a tight seal between your door and the floor. If this isn’t the case, you should get it replaced.
