Should You Install Two Single Garage Doors or a Double Garage Door?

Should You Install Two Single Garage Doors or a Double Garage Door?

Which is better for you: a double garage door or two single garage doors?

Your garage door is likely one of the most noticeable parts of your home. In many cases, the garage door of the attached garage is forward-facing and prominent (this is less true with detached garages). This means that it is one of the first things people see and it plays a huge role in curb appeal and that all-important first impression. If you want that first impression to be a good one, you need to do the work of maintaining your garage door: completing yearly or seasonal servicing, fixing broken windows, painting, or staining it, and so on.  If you have a very large garage door opening, you also have to decide which is better for you: a double garage door or two single garage doors. For many, this preference will come down to how it looks, but there are also other factors that you should consider before making your choice.

How Much Space

Let’s start with the bottom line – if you’re interested in having two single garage doors as the entrance and egress for your garage, you need to have enough space. Specifically, you need at minimum 22 feet of width at the front. If your garage is not at least this wide, you don’t have enough space for two single doors. For a double door, on the other hand, you can typically get away with as little as 18 feet wide.

The Pros Of Two

Having two garage doors means that you have more control over the way that the garage opens to the world. This means that if you want to try to keep half of your garage shielded from the weather, changing temperatures, or even just outside eyes, you have more ability to do that, by only opening one door as needed. Having two single garage doors means that your large garage can be used as a garage on one half and as something else on the other half (like a gym or a workshop). Also, two single garage doors looks very unique and striking on the front of a house – there likely won’t be another home in the neighborhood with the same look. Finally, if you have two and one breaks down, you can still use the other.

The Cons Of Two

The downside of two doors is that then you have twice as much to maintain, service. paint, and so on. Additionally, two single doors together usually utilize a smaller door than a traditional single door on its own. If you have a very large car, this may not be a reasonable solution for your garage.

The Pros Of One

If you only have one garage door, you only have one to maintain and service, which could certainly save you money in the long run. One double door will  also almost always be less money up-front than buying and installing two single doors. Additionally, if you drive very large cars, one double garage door is likely a better solution.

The Cons Of One

The biggest drawback of one door is that if it malfunctions, you’re stuck till you can get it repaired.
